Maybe a Little too Confident a Little Too Soon!

I have been practicing with the Drone for a week or two now and have been doing a lot of studying on the computer to learn the rules and regulations, but I just discovered that if I don't want to crash it in the Ocean, the Forest or anywhere else I need to do a lot more flying.

A couple of days ago, I took the drone down to the ocean to fly it on the beach and get some neat pictures and video. All went well until the wind started picking up and I realized the battery was running down a little faster than normal fighting the wind.

The video covers it pretty well, and although it makes me look a little foolish, I learned a good lesson and realized I need a lot more practice flying and learning all of the features of the drone. While I work on learning some of these things, you can enjoy the video.

It looks pretty easy on video, but even though it is a drone and it has lots of features, you can still loose it or crash it if you aren't paying attention.

ENJOY

  1. Oh man, you had me worried there for a bit. You handled that as if you have crash landed a few planes in your time :)

    Love you pops.

    1. Trust me, I am guessing it is just the lighting, but thanks anyway... ;=)

  3. I have to admit that I have been in a couple of situations where I was much more concerned about splashing down in the water because of weather when I was actually sitting in the cockpit.

But I am supposed to be older and a little wiser 40 years later. 🤔

We are loving this retirement gig. Travel day today, headed to Oceana in upper Washington state, about 30 miles out.

  4. Glad I had a "spoiler" to this video from the hints in the email you sent me explaining about the new url. I enjoyed watching the real thing. The ocean footage was beautiful but sorry you had to have the negative experience getting that for us. I know you will learn valuable information from the experience. Congratulations on finishing up the course and passing the exam.

    1. You are so right on just how beautiful the ocean beaches are, we so enjoy them and the only thing missing is a little more sunshine. We are so glad you are still enjoying following the blog and videos, but it will be even more enjoyable to get to Snyder and visit with you and Britt in person for a couple of days.

Thanks again for all your sweet comments

  5. Wow! That was so much fun to watch and I think that you are an outstanding drone pilot, especially given the short amount of time that you have been practicing. The footage was absolutely beautiful too! What a gorgeous setting and great campsite! I am still amazed when I see cars driving on the beach. It's so different from Southern California beaches. =) We love these videos and posts. Keep up the awesome work and thanks for sharing with us!

    1. So looking forward to hooking up with you all again later this fall. I am also anxious to hear how your studies are going and if you and Steve are firming up any future plans on where you might be living or projects you may be thinking about undertaking. Seems you two always are up to something new and exciting.

  6. Agree, the beache/ocean is beautiful and we really enjoy watching the waves coming in and out. It would be even nicer if they had some of that 80 or 90 degree sunshine so we could actually walk out into the water without shivering.

I may have mis-spoke but I have only passed the school remote pilot test so far. I have to pay $150 and go to an FAA site go pass the official test & get my remote pilot license to be classified as a commercial drone pilot & skip a lot of the No Fly Rules for hobby pilots. I think next week sometime.

Wish me luck as I am forgetting most of it as fast as I learn it.

Thanks again for all the nice comments, we love you all and happy you're still enjoying following along with us.

  7. You will do fine on your test...it will all come back to you. I miss the Ocean. Loved the video. Altho I knew the outcome I was worried as it was going like more over the Ocean. Did you figure out what had gone on? Maybe higher than what you planned or just the wind canceling out the motor or both?

    1. Mostly me just new and not confident of my flying ability. The drone did everything right, and I could see the video that it was close to me but since I couldn't see it in the sky or hear it, I couldn't help but worry that I was doing something wrong. Just need more time and built up that confidence.
