Practicing with the Drone

I have had the drone for almost a week now and it really is fun. I have discovered that there are a lot of restrictions flying the drone though. The main one is that if I am within 5 miles of an airport, I have to contact the airport manager or control tower to let them know I will be flying my drone in their air space. That is a big pain in the backside. as there are airports everywhere.

If I get a commercial drone pilot license, then I don't have to do a lot of these things as I can simply check the aviation charts and locate the restricted or controlled airspace and stay out of that area. That is much easier as most restricted airspace is above the 400 foot ceiling that drones are allowed to fly in, so except for airports in really big and busy areas, I can fly most places. There are still quite a few other restrictions, but I should be able to figure them out and follow the rules without too much trouble.

It will take a month or two to get certified but hopefully I can get it done and keep flying the drone as it is a lot of fun and as I get a little better at flying it and operating the camera, I can film some really nice video since we are in such a pretty part of america.

Enjoy the video, and I will work on getting my license and more video while we are here in the Pacific North West.

  1. You are getting good with that drone :) Can't wait to hear how Caddel Aeriel Photography does once you get that going. I know I would love it if the campgrounds we visited had drone footage of the grounds, it would be great to see before arriving.

When you are in Sacramento you will have to visit Brynn at UC Davis, she would love to visit with you both again.

Watch out for those mosquitoes and keep the posts coming. Love you both.

  2. I was thinking that Aidan might want to check into picking up some business with a drone. It appears to be a thriving industry and lots of folks are becoming commercial drone pilots and filming agriculture, real estate, recreation events, etc as a business. With Aidans training in filming he might be pretty good at it, enjoy it and make a career of it. I doubt I will get very far as I don't have too much ambition since about the time I might start to get good at it, I will probably start needing to use a walker and that takes both hands to operate by itself.

Maybe we could be Aidans assistants if he gets any tropical island shoots he could take us along and get a tax deduction.....

  3. Those that are not checking the blog are sure missing out. I love your videos and stories! Bev said she has tried but can’t get on. I will see if I can figure out why when I am there Wednesday. I talked to brother Steve yesterday and he said he did not have the blog address so I emailed it to him. I am glad to hear it was Josh that informed you of some of the drone regulations and not an officer or government official. I think that is great you are getting a commercial drone pilot license. I think there could definitely be a market for selling aerial footage. Steven Shane described my thoughts exactly. The pictures on a website influence me a lot when I am renting a camping spot, cabin or B&B. An aerial view would certainly be helpful to prevent surprises. Of course what you said about selling footage to other campers who might just want aerial footage of their campsite would be fun too. When you start thinking about it, there could be many ways to market the advantages of aerial photography. Britt said a drone was used to check out damage on the steeple at our church a few months back.

Did your friends buy the marina at Lake Whitney? I believe I noticed Thousand Oaks had a campground at Lake Whitney. Really looking forward to having the two of you spend some time here in Texas!

Hope you have purchased your mosquito spray and made that 10 minute hike down to the ocean. That sure looks beautiful.

    1. I am thinking anyone having problems must be typing in the address incorrectly as I don't think think there are any barriers that would block anyone from coming right in to read.

I received about a dozen notices from family members that said they were going to follow along (I think Diane said she planned to) but I think they may have simply forgot or possibly a little confused on just how to get here. That is why I keep posting the address in hopes that anyone that is trying to join in can do so. Thank you for mentioning it to everyone and hopefully as more people do get in they will be able to show others. Even if no one read or viewed the videos, it is fun for us to do and it documents our travels so we can go back and review ourselves.

Nope, Mike and Donna weren't able to pull off the purchase of the marina at Lake Whitney. They tried for a couple of months but it just didn't happen. Darn It, I was hoping it would go through as they wanted to do it with their son to help him start a business. I am sure they will find another opportunity though.

We have the mesquite repellent and will probably head out to the beach today or tomorrow. It is kind of cool here (62) so not as inviting as a nice warm 75 or 80 degree afternoon might be. Although, I am not complaining about the temperatures as some friends are telling us it is awful hot in Vegas and I assume the entire south. We are moving up another 100 miles this week-end to Oceana so it will probably stay nice and cool for a while.

I love that you are going to get your commercial drone pilot license too. That's fantastic and it will really open up your possibilities for filming even MORE awesome footage!

  5. Just a thought, maybe you could get a domain name that would be easy to type in to a browser and just set the name to forward to your blog. Something like jrpacaddel.com or whichwayblog.com (both are available). It would be a cheap way to make it nice and easy for people to access the blog. If you ever switched to another blog service you could just change the forward with godaddy to the new service.

  7. Boom, that worked great. Now you need to add that to your "business" cards for all of the new RV friends you meet :)
